WHAT ARE PEMFs AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
Have you ever held two magnets in your hands and tried to force them together but found that you could not because there was a resistance between them? If so, you have felt a magnetic field. The Earth has its own magnetic field. Life cannot exist outside this, because cells are unable to function without an electromagnetic exchange. Put simply, an electromagnetic field is a physical field that is generated by moving electrical charges. Cells contain electrically charged particles, called ions, which enable a low, natural electrical current to flow. Any changes in the electrical qualities of a cell cause various ion « pumps » to activate, which work to move nutriends back and forth across the cell wall. PEMFs effectively put a magnetic field in motion, thus activating the pump, which in turn enhances the metabolic rate of the cell.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields, or PEMFs have been used since the 1970s to improve circulation and cell metabolism. PEMFs, which are used for electromagnetic therapy, are not in any way the same thing as man-made electromagnetic fields, such as power lines, micro waves and cell phones, which can cause damage to our bodies. The Impulse Line Activo-Med blanket produces safe, natural pulsed electromagnetic fields, of a low frequency, which are holistic to the physics and functions of the horse’s body.
HOW DOES PEMF FOR MY HORSE WORK WITH THE ACTIVO-MED IMPULSE LINE BLANKET?
The ImpulseLine blanket is designed to envelop the horse with a healing magnetic field of 12 to 14 inches by pulsing a small amount of battery current through coils of wire to initiate normal biological cellular reactions that result in enhanced cellular function, improved circulation, boosting healing immensely, and providing pain relief.
WHAT DOES PEMF FEEL LIKE TO MY HORSE?
Equine PEMF Therapy is totally non-invasive. PEMF therapy does not involve physical muscle stimulations, such as ‘muscle jumping’ or ‘pin-pricking’ sensations. Equine PEMF Therapy works at the cellular level within your horse, and you will therefore know that it is working when see your horse respond to the energy with a appreciative reaction. Signs that the treatment is working are :
– Your horse will relax
– His eyes will gain a soft look
– He will lick his lips and/or chew
He will have an overall contented look or even fall asleep.
WHEN SHOULD I USE PEMF?
Equine PEMF Therapy has many uses.
Not only can PEMF therapy be used to help the healing process post injury or post surgery, enabling the recovery process to be almost twice as fast as opposed to drugs and box rest alone; PEMF will also fight muscle atrophy while the horse is on box rest or reduced work.
Equine PEMF Therapy can also be incorporated as part of a regular conditioning and training programme. PEMF helps to reduce warm-up and cool-down times, thus enabling the rider to have an edge on training. The use of PEMF therapy allows you to continue to work your older horse regularly without needing to maintain a high level of training to maintain fitness and soundness.
PEMF therapy is very effective in treating soreness of muscles and joints. This is especially true for areas such as the back and stifle, which are areas that require deep penetration and are not easy to treat using other methods.
PEMF therapy can be used on horses of all ages and disciplines. Many of the world’s top trainers and riders have endorsed the ActivoMed Impulse Line system and use it as part of their daily training and fitness maintenance of their horses, with results that speak for themselves.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HORSE FOR A PEMF THERAPY
Please ensure that your horse is groomed and ready for his treatment. If your horse is currently under any prescribed medication, please consult with your veterinarian prior to booking PEMF therapy. Medication should not be discontinued without consulting your veterinarian.
Please do not be alarmed if your horse starts licking, chewing, yawning or hanging his head: these are all indications that the therapy is working!
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS
Each horse is different and will react differently to PEMF therapy. Usually the benefits of a PEMF therapy last from between 12 to 72 hours, but can last for a few weeks as well. There are many factors to take into account such as the horse’s diet, workload, level of fitness, whether they are competing and also their general state of well-being.
HOW LONG DOES A PEMF TREAMENT LAST
A single PEMF therapy session lasts 30 minutes for a body treatment and 20 minutes per pair of legs (therefore 40 minutes if all four legs are to be treated).
Please ensure, specifically on show days or when riding in clinics, that you allow yourself enough time to groom your horse and enough time for the therapist to place the equipent and remove it once the session is complete. Clients are therefore asked to allow for 40-45 minutes per PEMF therapy session.
